Ranch Dressing

One of my resolutions for this year was to learn how to make the classics. Sure, I can turn cocoa puffs into tart shells but I can’t fry a chicken. I’ve never made eggs Benedict. I’ve never even made salad dressing! So that’s where we’re starting. Simple ranch dressing.

I wasn’t expecting it to be difficult because, hey, just about anyone can pick up a whisk. But I was excited to try something other than the bottled stuff. It turned out so better than I had hoped! You can definitely taste the freshness of the parsley and dill.

My husband’s really into salads right now so if anyone has a great thousand island recipe, puh-lease pass it on. It’s his favorite and I’m a little scared of screwing it up.

Ranch Dressing

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon parsley, minced
1/2 teaspoon fresh dill, minced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper

In a large bowl, whisk all ingredients. If it’s too thick, add buttermilk a teaspoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. Refrigerate 1 hour before serving.

  1. I love homemade ranch dressing! I learned to make ranch and italian, and both are exactly what we need. They’re great for cooking things, as well as their original purpose: salads. :) Enjoy!

I have one daughter who is is a ranch-o-holic. She would have ranch dressing on anything she eats if I let her. This would be dangerous in my house.

OH man… I put ranch dressing on everything…my husband says it’s obsessive, haha. Sometimes I head to the fridge and get the dressing out, and then realize I have a cake in front of me….it’s on automatic! Good stuff though…been into it for years.

It tastes even a million times better if you used homemade mayonnaise! I also sometimes add sour creme/creme fraiche to make it thicker for a dip (homemade if I have the time). Yummm.

I have made homemade thousand island dressing since I moved out. My Mom has always made it. I use mayo and ketchup, add garlic salt and wahla! Of course, you could also add reish. Try it and see if you like it! I don’t have any measurements but I make it to taste and love it!
